Millerd grew up in Connecticut and studied industrial engineering and management at the University of Connecticut before earning an MBA and a master's degree in systems engineering from MIT.
Millerd spent roughly a decade in management strategy consulting, including time at McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group, and later worked at a New York executive search firm focused on CEO succession, before leaving corporate work entirely in 2017 with no other job lined up. An eighteen month battle with Lyme disease had already made the pace of consulting work increasingly untenable, and he has written about the departure as less a single dramatic decision than the end point of a slow realization that the prestige and pay of his career were not answering the actual question of how he wanted to live. After leaving, he spent an extended, deliberately unstructured stretch without a clear plan before building a self-directed life around writing, coaching people trying to leave or break into consulting through his practice StrategyU, and independent consulting projects. His newsletter, launched in 2017 and first called Boundless before being renamed Pathless, has grown to more than 26,000 subscribers across 400-plus issues. In 2022 he self-published The Pathless Path, which has earned him more than $300,000 in royalties and been read in multiple languages, followed by a second book, Good Work, in 2024.
Millerd continues to publish his newsletter most weeks, coach clients through StrategyU, and is widely cited in career writing that pushes back against the default script of school, then a prestigious job, then a career ladder, then retirement, as one of the clearer voices arguing that a life built from many smaller, self-directed commitments is a legitimate alternative to a single employer and a single ladder.
