Early life and education

Ferriss grew up in East Hampton, New York, dealing with health struggles as a child that helped shape his later fascination with self experimentation. At fifteen he spent a year in Japan as an exchange student, an experience he has credited with permanently widening his sense of what a normal life could look like. He wrestled competitively in high school, attended St. Paul's School, and graduated from Princeton University in 2000 with a degree in East Asian Studies.

Career

In 2001 Ferriss founded BrainQUICKEN, an online nutritional supplements company he ran while still holding a day job, an experience that became the basis for The 4-Hour Workweek, published in 2007, which popularized the phrase lifestyle design and argued for applying the 80/20 principle to an entire life rather than just a task list. He sold BrainQUICKEN to a private equity firm in 2010, and by then had already become a prolific early angel investor and advisor to a wide range of startups, including Uber, Facebook, Twitter, and Shopify, well before most of them were widely recognized as major companies. Since 2014 he has hosted The Tim Ferriss Show, an interview podcast that has passed one billion downloads and become one of the most influential long form interview shows in business and self improvement media, deconstructing the habits and routines of hundreds of world class performers across sport, business, and the arts. He distilled hundreds of those interviews into Tools of Titans (2016) and Tribe of Mentors (2017).

Legacy and death

Ferriss remains one of the most listened to interviewers in business and self improvement media, and continues to write, invest, and produce his podcast. His fear setting exercise, an adaptation of Stoic premeditatio malorum for modern decision making, and his framing of the 80/20 principle as a life philosophy rather than only a business tool have become widely repeated reference points well outside his own audience.
