Early life and education

Veerasamy was born in 1990 in Singapore and began blogging in 2005, writing initially about Singapore politics and current affairs through his early twenties before turning toward psychology, ambition, and self expression. He was the first marketing hire and blog editor at ReferralCandy, a Singapore based marketing company, where he grew the company blog from roughly two thousand to over one hundred thirty thousand monthly hits between 2013 and 2018, and co-founded Statement.sg, a Singaporean apparel brand.

Career

He left ReferralCandy in 2018 to write full time, continuing a project he started in 2012 called 1000wordvomits, a public commitment to write one thousand unedited essays of at least one thousand words each; as of 2026 he remains short of completing it. In 2020 he self published Friendly Ambitious Nerd, an edited collection of his best essays and threads from over a decade of writing, and coined the phrase as a name for a specific identity, someone smart, striving, and a little awkward, who wants to build things and be liked without yet believing both are possible. His current project, published under the name frame studies, examines how a person's frameworks rather than the facts in front of them determine what they are able to see and do.

Legacy and death

Veerasamy has no traditionally published book and no standalone Wikipedia article; his primary body of work lives entirely on his own site and in roughly a quarter million tweets, an unusually large first person corpus for a writer working almost entirely outside traditional publishing. His recurring contribution is less a single argument than a stance: that writing unedited, in public, over many years, is itself a legitimate method for figuring out who you are, not only a way of sharing a conclusion already reached.

Claude Code skills

Frameworks distilled from Visakan’s life, packaged as Claude Code skills. Each skill is invoked with a slash command and grounded in the primary biographies listed under References.

The Friendly Ambitious Nerd Method

/visakan:visakan

Give the smart, striving, slightly awkward part of yourself permission to want things out loud, and treat writing about it, unedited, as a real way of figuring yourself out.

Greatness Is Deviance

/visakan:greatness-is-deviance

Nobody does something nobody else can yet see without passing through cringe. If you want to do something great, you have to behave differently than most people first.

Word Magic

/visakan:word-magic

Write to figure yourself out, not to perform an already finished thought. Experiment with the phrasing until you find the handful of words that actually carry weight.

Write for the Outliers, Not Most People

/visakan:write-for-outliers

Aim at the 0.1 percent outliers in optimism, thoughtfulness, and drive, not the average reader. Optimizing for the median produces nothing worth reading or becoming.

Claim the Identity

/visakan:claim-the-identity

Name the identity you have been living without permission to claim. A named identity, like friendly ambitious nerd, gives you somewhere to stand instead of feeling alone in a contradiction.
