Listen to It Instead of Looking at It

He ends as a ferryman, which is the least distinguished thing he could possibly become. He carries people across a river, and the river turns out to be the teacher that no teacher could be.

What he learns first is that the river is everywhere at once. The source, the mouth, the waterfall, the sea. Not in sequence. Simultaneously. And so, he sees, is a person. The child he was is not behind him. It is present, now, along with everything else he has ever been.

This dissolves the thing that had been tormenting him, which was the idea that his life was a line with wasted stretches on it. If everything is present at once, there is nothing to have wasted. There is only what is here, containing all of it.

And notice how he learns it. Not by studying the river. By listening to it. He had spent decades looking at things and taking them apart. The river gave him nothing until he stopped interrogating it and simply attended to it.

You have some question you have been analysing for a long time without moving. Try attending to it instead of examining it. Sit with it for an hour without trying to solve it. That is not mysticism, it is a different faculty, and most people never use it.
