Early life and education

Jen-Hsun Huang was born on 17 February 1963 in Tainan, Taiwan, the son of a chemical engineer and a schoolteacher. Sources disagree on the city: Britannica and most Taiwanese accounts give Tainan, while his English Wikipedia entry gives Taipei. When he was about five the family followed his father's refinery work to Thailand. Political unrest there led his parents to send Jensen and his older brother to relatives in Tacoma, Washington, in 1973, when he was nine. The relatives enrolled him at the Oneida Baptist Institute in Oneida, Kentucky, apparently believing it was a prestigious boarding school. In practice it was a rural reform academy for troubled teenagers. Huang, one of the youngest boys on campus, was assigned to clean the dormitory bathrooms for a hundred older students, and his roommate was a seventeen year old covered in knife scars whom Huang taught to read and who in return taught him to lift weights. He was bullied and he excelled academically, and he has spent forty years telling audiences that no task is beneath him because of it. His parents eventually reached the United States and the family settled in Beaverton, Oregon, where Huang attended Aloha High School, skipped two grades and graduated at sixteen. At fifteen he took his first job at a Denny's in Portland, working as a dishwasher, busboy and then waiter. He was also a serious table tennis player who scrubbed floors at the Paddle Palace club to fund tournament travel, finished third in junior doubles at the U.S. Open, and was described in a reader's letter published by Sports Illustrated in January 1978 as perhaps the most promising junior ever to play table tennis in the Northwest. He entered Oregon State University at sixteen and earned a BS in electrical engineering in 1984. He was the youngest student in a class he has described as 250 people and three women, and in an electrical fundamentals lab he was paired with one of them, Lori Mills. They married in 1985. He went to work as a chip designer while completing a master's in electrical engineering at Stanford in 1992, taking night classes over roughly eight years.

Career

Huang began at Advanced Micro Devices in 1984 as a microprocessor designer, then moved to LSI Logic, where he shifted from engineering into marketing and management and ran the Coreware business. There he worked with two Sun Microsystems engineers, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, who were frustrated with the state of PC graphics. The three met repeatedly at a Denny's on Berryessa Road in East San Jose, the same chain Huang had bussed tables for, because the coffee was bottomless and nobody moved them along. Nvidia was incorporated on 5 April 1993, with Huang as president and CEO from the first day, at age 30. The name derives from the Latin invidia. Sequoia Capital and Sutter Hill Ventures backed the company, and in 2023 Denny's fixed a plaque to the founding booth. The first decade nearly killed it. The NV1 (1995) bet on a graphics approach the industry did not adopt, and a Sega console contract collapsed when Huang concluded mid project that Nvidia's architecture was wrong. He told Sega's president Shoichiro Irimajiri the truth and asked to be paid anyway; the resulting $5 million, Huang later said, gave the company six months to live. In 1996 he cut headcount from about 100 to roughly 40 and put everything into one chip. The RIVA 128 shipped in August 1997 with about one month of payroll remaining and sold roughly a million units in four months. Nvidia went public on 22 January 1999 and released the GeForce 256 later that year, the first part it marketed as a graphics processing unit. The decisive bet came in November 2006, when Huang unveiled CUDA and began spending billions to make GPUs programmable for general purpose computing, a move that crushed margins and baffled investors for years. It paid off in 2012, when AlexNet showed that GPUs could train deep neural networks, and again in 2016, when Huang personally delivered Nvidia's first DGX-1 AI supercomputer to OpenAI. The generative AI boom that followed made Nvidia the most valuable company on earth. It crossed $1 trillion in market capitalization in May 2023, passed Microsoft and Apple in June 2024 at about $3.3 trillion, became the first company to close above $4 trillion in July 2025, and reached $5 trillion in October 2025, trading at roughly that level in July 2026. Huang runs it with a deliberately flat structure: no personal office, about 60 direct reports, almost no one on one meetings, status delivered by short written updates he calls the top five things, and criticism given in front of the group so everyone learns at once. He has opened internal presentations for decades with the line that the company is thirty days from going out of business, and he has become a geopolitical figure as well as a corporate one, negotiating around U.S. export controls on China and promoting the idea of sovereign AI to national governments.

Legacy and death

Jensen Huang is the longest tenured founder chief executive in the semiconductor industry, having led one company for more than thirty years, and he is the person most responsible for the fact that the machinery of artificial intelligence runs on graphics chips. The insight that made him was not a product but a category error he refused to accept: that a processor built to draw triangles was only good for drawing triangles. CUDA turned the GPU into a general purpose parallel computer roughly six years before deep learning needed one, an investment made without a market and defended through years of poor stock performance. The pace of improvement in his accelerators has been dubbed Huang's Law. His public philosophy is unusually bleak for a technology executive and unusually specific: he does not preach vision or genius, he preaches endurance, low expectations, and the usefulness of humiliation, arguing that resilience rather than intelligence separates people who finish from people who quit. He and Lori established the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang Foundation in 2007, which by late 2025 held assets in excess of $12 billion, making it one of the largest private foundations in the United States. Their named gifts include $50 million to Oregon State University toward the Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex and $30 million to Stanford for the Huang Engineering Center. Scrutiny has followed the scale: a December 2024 New York Times investigation reported that Huang's estate planning, using grantor trusts, is positioned to avoid roughly $8 billion in future estate taxes, and critics note that a large share of the foundation's grants have flowed into donor advised funds rather than to operating charities. As of 23 July 2026 Forbes estimated his net worth at $183.2 billion, seventh in the world, essentially all of it Nvidia stock. He still wears the black leather jacket, and he still tells graduating classes that he hopes they suffer.
