Tobias Lütke was born on July 16, 1980, in Koblenz, in what was then West Germany. By his own account he struggled in a conventional classroom, was diagnosed with learning difficulties, and was medicated for them, an experience he later reframed as being a hands-on, kinesthetic learner rather than a broken student. He gravitated to computers young, teaching himself to program by tinkering, and by his teens was far more engaged by code than by school. At sixteen he left secondary school and entered Germany's dual-education system, apprenticing as a Fachinformatiker, a computer programmer, at BOG Koblenz, a subsidiary of Siemens, with classroom training at the Carl-Benz-School in Koblenz. There a senior engineer he calls Jürgen became his master teacher, running a small skunkworks out of a basement room and covering his printouts in red marker until Lütke learned, in his words, not to tangle his ego up in the code he writes. He has said the apprenticeship let him move through ten years of career development every year, and that degrees no longer matter but experience does. During a holiday in Canada he met Fiona McKean, whose parents were diplomats, and in the early 2000s he moved to her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario.
In 2004 Lütke set out to sell snowboards online, launching a shop called Snowdevil with Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake. Finding the available e-commerce software inadequate, he wrote his own storefront on a very early version of Ruby on Rails. The software quickly proved more valuable than the snowboards, and in 2006 the team relaunched the underlying platform as Shopify. In these years Lütke joined the Ruby on Rails core team and released Active Merchant, an open-source payments library still in wide use. He built much of the early company from an Ikea desk in his wife's childhood bedroom while his father-in-law helped cover payroll. Scott Lake served as the first chief executive, and Lütke took over as CEO in 2008. Shopify grew into the leading commerce platform for independent merchants, positioning itself as the arms dealer to businesses competing against Amazon. On May 21, 2015, the company went public, pricing its IPO at 17 dollars a share, raising about 131 million dollars, and listing on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker SHOP. The stock jumped 51 percent on its first day, valuing Shopify above 1.2 billion dollars and making Lütke a billionaire on paper. Lütke has said that after the IPO he spent years cosplaying a conventional public-company CEO before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a reset. He threw out the company's plans, personally reviewed its projects, cancelled a large share of them, and rebuilt his executive team, later modeling the whole organization from first principles in a version-controlled system he treats like software. He told staff in a 2020 memo that Shopify is a team, not a family, and in an April 2025 memo he made reflexive AI usage a baseline expectation for every employee. By fiscal 2025 Shopify processed 378.4 billion dollars in merchant sales and reported about 11.6 billion dollars in revenue, each up roughly 30 percent year over year. Lütke has served on the board of Coinbase since 2022 and races sports cars as an amateur in his spare time.
Tobi Lütke is the engineer who turned a failing online snowboard shop into the software that millions of merchants in more than 175 countries sell through, and one of the defining figures of Canadian technology. By arming small and independent businesses with tools once reserved for the largest retailers, Shopify became a genuine counterweight to Amazon and one of Canada's most valuable public companies, and Lütke built it while keeping the mindset of a toolmaker rather than a conventional executive. He is widely read for his first-principles approach to company building, his insistence on differentiation over imitation, and his early, aggressive embrace of AI as a baseline skill. He holds Canadian and German citizenship, having regained the latter in 2022. Canada awarded him the Meritorious Service Cross in 2018 for his contribution to the growth of the Canadian technology industry, and he had earlier been named CEO of the Year by The Globe and Mail in 2014. As of August 2025 his net worth was estimated near 12.3 billion dollars, almost all of it tied to his roughly 7 percent stake in Shopify, through which he retains about 40 percent of the company's voting power.
